Hand-coloured engraving of an illustration found in Athanasius Kircher's China Illustrata (1667), an encyclopedic work compiled in Rome based on contributions of numerous Jesuit missionaries. With his enormous range of scholarly pursuits the 17th-century polymath Athanasius Kircher has been hailed as the last Renaissance man and "the master of hundred arts".
