One of German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer's most famous and enigmatic compositions. It is likely that the "I" in the title refers to the first of the three types of melancholia defined by the German humanist writer Cornelius Agrippa. Named "Melencholia Imaginativa" it is the kind that artists were most predisposed, in which "imagination'"predominates over "mind'"or "reason".
